On February 15, 2024, the Guildford Islamic Cultural Center (GICC) hosted a Community Dinner and Fundraising night at Empire Banquet Hall for their New Islamic Center Project in North Surrey. Over 600 people from the community came together to support this important cause.
A special guest speaker, Sheikh Jamal Hammoud (imam of Akram Jummah in Calgary) was invited for the inspiring evening. Sheikh Jamal highlighted the importance of building a community and staying strong in our faith. His talk was exciting and entertaining for all in attendance.
Sh. Jamal was joined by Sh. Yusuf bin Yakoob, the imam of GICC, who highlighted the fundraising efforts the GICC team has made so far to reach the next payment deadline. Sh. Yusuf explained how he travelled across Canada with some of the board members of GICC to personally visit over 400 masjids and musallahs to gain their support for the GICC project. His incredible journey with the GICC team across Canada has so far raised over $600K for the GICC project. Alahmdulillah.
During the evening, people felt united and hopeful. They learnt about the variety of GICC programs and services including Muslim Funeral Aid Services (MFAS) which minimizes the cost of the funeral to less than $8 per person. Everyone pledged money to help build the new Islamic center. Whether they gave a little or a lot, each donation showed their belief in working together for good.
The success of the night wasn't just about money. It was about people coming together, learning from each other, and supporting their community. The dinner was more than just an event, it was a symbol of unity, strength, and the power of kindness. It reminded everyone that by working together, we can make a real difference in the world.
