The Premier of the British Columbia Hon David Eby, met with the members of the Muslim community today at the Surrey/Delta Jamea Masjid.
Mr Eby along with the Minister of Labour Mr Harry Bains, outlined the provincial governments, four key priorities including Health care, affordable housing, public safety and support for strong economy.
Members of the BCMA Executive council President Mr Asad Gondal along with VP Altaf Sahib, Sikandar Khan and Afzal Malik raised urgency of school facility for Muslim children in Surrey as population is growing rapidly. Members requested Premier to help find a land somewhere in Surrey, on which BCMA can build a full facility school on its own.
Mr Eby promised that he will look into this issue and will provide his assistance to start the process.
Members of the Executive council raised issue of having a lack of cemetery facilities for the Muslims.
"With the increase number of Muslim population in BC, the number of deaths are also increasing, and the urgent need to bury the deceased at a reasonable cost and according to the Muslim rituals must be followed, and there's no other option" said Mr Gondal.
Members also raised issue of a slow process in acquiring the BC Hydro parking lot on lease applied by the Surrey/Delta Masjid couple of years ago.
Mr Harry Bains, said" with the recent administration changes at the provincial level, it may have been behind in the process, however, I will definitely look into it and get back to the council asap".
The meeting ended-up with the members of BCMA Executive Council, some members of Surrey/Delta Branch and SD womens chapter having a photo op with the Premier.
This is the first time any Provincial Premier has atended BCMA Surrey/Delta.
