With the re-election of David Eby and the BC NDP, the Muslim community in British Columbia is hopeful for continued progress on issues affecting minorities. Among the newly elected representatives is Amna Shah MLA for Surrey City Centre, making history as BC's first Pakistani Muslim MLA. Shah’s victory, where she defeated her opponent by 236 votes, marks a milestone for representation and reflects the BC NDP's commitment to diverse voices in the legislature.
A Vision Rooted in Community Service Having lived in Surrey for nearly two decades, Amna Shah’s deep connection to her community drives her approach to public service. Growing up, her family instilled in her the importance of compassion, public service, and advocacy for the community—values she has carried forward in her work. She has previously served as the Director of Outreach for the BC NDP caucus and remains a board member at the Surrey Food Bank, where she has been instrumental in expanding services to ensure families in Surrey can access nutritious food in a dignified manner.
Shah’s background in housing policy with BC’s Ministry of Housing has equipped her to tackle Surrey’s most pressing issues, including affordable housing, improved healthcare access, and expanded transit. She has championed policies to make housing affordable, many of which are already in effect today, and has pledged to focus on healthcare expansion and community safety.
A Historic Step for Minority Representation Shah’s election represents an important moment for BC’s Muslim and South Asian communities. Her victory aligns with the BC NDP's ongoing mission to make the province inclusive and accessible for all. As the first Pakistani Muslim MLA in BC, Shah embodies the diverse voices that have shaped British Columbia, and she’s eager to work with her new colleagues to bring fresh ideas to the legislature.
Looking Ahead: High Expectations for Progress The BC NDP enters this term with high expectations and a mandate to deliver meaningful change. “People want their elected representatives to deliver results,” said Eby. “Together, we can make sure BC is a place where everyone can get ahead and build a good life.” This ambitious vision will be carried forward by both seasoned representatives and fresh voices like Shah, who are dedicated to addressing the everyday needs of British Columbians.
Shah's commitment to Surrey City Centre is a testament to her dedication to those she represents. Her efforts will focus on making life better for working families in her community, a promise that voters will be watching closely in the years to come.
Congratulations to David Eby, Amna Shah, and the BC NDP team. A special thanks to the volunteers across the province who rallied support for their candidates, ensuring that every voice was heard.
