Mahmood Awan Honoured with the King Charles III Coronation Medal

Mahmood Awan has recently been honoured with the King Charles III Coronation Medal from Member of Parliament Mr. Wilson Miao. He is also a proud recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Mahmood was among other community leaders who were similarly recognized. Mahmood Awan immigrated to Canada from Uganda in 1972 with his family. Shortly thereafter, he opened an automotive business in Richmond that he successfully owned with his family for over forty five years. After settling in Richmond, he quickly became a prominent fixture and has worked tirelessly to promote diversity, inclusivity and understanding, actively contributing to various non profit organizations and has been a diligent leader in the Muslim, Pakistani, and Canadian communities.
Mahmood is a founding member of the first mosque in Richmond, BC, and is also one of the founding members of the Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association and was also the Past President of Pakistan Canada Association. He was the first Vice President of the National Federation of Pakistani Canadians and also served as the Federation’s Chairperson responsible for immigration & refugee issues.
Though he has been a leader and board member for many organizations, most notably Mahmood has sat as a board member of the Office of the Commissioner of Review Tribunals for Canada Pension Plans and Old Age Security Appeals, The Richmond Hospital, College of Podiatric Surgeons of BC, Richmond Caring Place, Intercultural Advisory Committee, the Richmond Advisory Committee on Policing and helped to establish BC’s first Multicultural Advisory Committee, a Board member of the Touchstone Family Association for eighteen years, Advisory Committee Member of the “The Spirit of Islam” at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC. He has also served the BC Muslim Association as a Trustee, Constitution Committee member and the BCMA Richmond Branch Board Member, the BCMA Highway Committee Chair.
These are just a few of the organizations that Mahmood has been associated with while continuing to facilitate ties and mutual respect within communities, fostering understanding and appreciation of cultural differences. A proud Pakistani-Canadian, he is a leader who has worked tirelessly in his community for over seventy years. He is guided by one principle which is to be an exemplary role model guided by compassion, integrity, honesty, justice and fairness to our fellow human beings.
